Culture

I have just returned from a night at the symphony! Snow White's high school hosted the Richmond Symphony Orchestra through a grant from the local Arts in Education program. Students from the choral, band, and art departments were featured in tonight's program. What a talented group of young people!

The night was a celebration of Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday. There was a "Lincoln Portrait", which was narrated by the school division's Performing Arts Lead Teacher Specialist. There was also "Prayer for Peace", and a musical tribute to the Civil War era.

What really struck me tonight was how these children have matured. The music that once made my ears bleed (think middle school performances), was now well executed and soothing. When did they all grow up???

I was humbled by one young man who had no arms. He somehow played the cello with his feet - matching the professionals bow stroke for bow stroke. It made me realize that there are no obstacles that these children cannot overcome. It also made me realize that my petty complaints are SO insignificant.

If you have the opportunity, go out and support your local school's art/performing arts programs. It's a great investment! These are our future singers, musicians, and artists. Budget cuts are reducing the funding available for these programs, but these students continue to pursue their dreams.

What a fabulous evening!

I would have loved to have been there. Abe is my hero. Just got two new books--one about Abe the Writer, and one about Mary Todd Lincoln. Can't wait to get into them. And the cellist? No words. Bless his heart.

Sounds like a lovely night supporting your local kids.
I am totally amazed by the feats of some kids (adults too) that overcome so many obstacles...yes, I have too many petty complaints.

Well put!! I totally agree! These children need all of our support.

I always found it odd that the music programs are the first to get cut, but sports programs always seem to have enough money. I really don't see a difference that would negate that kind of choice....

What a great evening! I love that you support Snow White's interests and talents too! And how inspirational is that cello player?! The only thing I do with my feet is get pedicures and count down the days until I can put them in flip flops!

The fine arts department at my childrens school was amazing. I was always over whelmed by the talent of the young people. Our local high school does plays and we should attend. You are right. They need our support.
