A Cast And A Crazy Straw

I present to you.........The Surveyor, circa 1972. Isn't he adorable? A real ladies man at the ripe old age of seven!

Let's begin with the cast. Construction was complete on the new elementary school in Small Town, USA. The kids were all excited about moving into their new digs. NEW PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT - YIIPPEEE! The monkey bars were calling his name.

On this particular day, the children chose to play tag - ON THE MONKEY BARS. Well, The Surveyor decided to practice his Spider Man moves, and crawled through the top bars. His plan was to ease himself down to the ground. As we all know, things don't always go according to plan.

The next thing he knew, he was lying on the ground with his armed pinned underneath his little body. The teacher said he was fine, the principal said he was fine, the nurse said he was fine.

The doctor, however, said he had a fracture. That's where the cast came in.

Now, about the straw. There is no better way to enjoy a chocolate milkshake than to sip it through a Crazy Straw. Remember those?

This particular relic, um really cool straw, came to him compliments of Shakey's Pizza. Did you ever go to Shakey's? They had a little area where you could stand and watch the guys in the barber shop quartet hats toss pizza. In addition, they gave all of the kids Crazy Straws. I have no idea if the pizza was any good. We were in it for the straws.

I never had a blue straw, only red. The Surveyor had both. He was spoiled.

I would also like to point out his pants, as if you hadn't already noticed them. Don't they just SCREAM 1972?

Thanks for stopping by for a little trip back in time. For more laughs, run on over to the Sincerely 'Fro Me To You carnival at We Are THAT Family. You won't regret it!

He must have been quite the ladies man!! I had a pair of green and white plaid pants in the 70's, so I feel his pain!

I do remember Shakey's, although in 72 I was very, very young. I don't remember any singing men, but I do remember the hats. I have a photo of me in one for my 4th or 5th b-day. Maybe I will post it next week!

We never had enough crazy straws to go around. The first one up got to pick the "fancy" spoon (those sample spoons you could get for $1 to see if you wanted the whole set. Now that I think of it, for a buck, my parents should have gotten each of the four of us one. I'm going to have to address that.) and crazy straw.

I thought of you over the weekend b/c in this brilliant moment of clarity I realized that all kinds of fashions from decades ago are coming back; it's only a matter of time before big hair comes back, and we're going to have to go through that all over again.

Hey! He's got on my brother's pants! I'm sure they looked exactly like those. No cast for my brother, though. He left that up to me. If I ever find my picture of me in a cast, I'll post it.

Anyway, your brother was a cutie!

My hubby & I met at age 12. He wore shorts like that. And he had a big blonde fro. I married him anyway. :)

He's SO cute! He could be the 4th brother in the Brady Bunch and would have been WAY better than stupid Cousin Oliver.

Oh, what a great picture and yes, I do remember Shakey's. I don't know that I ever went to one when I was a kid, but when I worked in Northern VA as an adult, there was one in Tysons Corner.

And I had a pair of pants just like those. I will also confess to having a pair of velour pants. What were we thinking? Was there any thought involved at all?

We had a Noble Romans where you could watch your pizza being made but the cheap bastards never gave me a freaking curly straw.
The girls were excited when I bought some awhile back.

My brother had pants like those. I just remember alot of polyester.

I love all things 1972. I was only 4 but photos from that year are most spectacular.

Yep, we had a Shakey's pizza. I have no recollection of the crazy straws from there. Hmmm.
