Fly Away Home

It's not uncommon to see dragonflies skim across the top of our pool in the summer. However, it IS uncommon to see a dragonfly on steroids the size of a BIRD attempt to skim the top of our pool. Yep. Didn't go so well for him.

I heard the kerplunk, looked over and saw the wake ripples in the water, and just KNEW something was in trouble over there. Imagine my surprise when I found this guy floating around! It was pitiful to see him struggling so hard to fly out of the pool, so I grabbed the net and rescued him. After gently setting him down, I ran to get my camera and prayed that he wouldn't fly away before I could get a few photos!

He cooperated. I only wish I had put a ruler beside him so you could get a better idea of how FREAKISHLY LARGE he was! The big guy eventually flew away home.

I hope he comes back to visit once in a while:)

That son of a gun looks like a brother to the one that I had a head-on collision with! Man, it hurts when they smack you in the nose while riding a bike!

My Uncle Bob is a dragonfly. Well, his spirit is...his remains are at Arlington.

That's not a dragon fly - that's a HELICOPTER. The same helicopter I have NIGHTMARES about, trying to find me at night with a searchlight.

I used to make fun of my daughter for having an abnormal fear of dragon flies. I've always been afraid of helicopters. It all makes sense now, and I'm going to apologize to her for not understanding.

Whoa - you can get a sense of how big he/she is just in perspective with the net. This is like one of those sturgeon who live at the bottom of a lake for 100 years...oh, the stories they could tell.

He is *HUGE* !
This year all we had around the pool were smaller ones. But we've never had one that big!

Have been thinking for a couple of years now of getting a "dragonfly" tattoo on my 60th birthday (I have *no* tattoos) hmmmmm

Do you remember that animated movie, Adventures of the Rescuers? This made me think of that, and I loved that movie. So thanks!
