High School Friends

I attended a VERY small high school. There were about fifty graduates in the Class of 1984. We were a tight-knit group, and have remained so in the years since. Although we don't see one another as often as we might like, we always seem to be able to pick up just where we left off.

Last year we lost one of our classmates to cancer. It was a horrible dose of reality, and it united us once again. Perhaps the bond is even stronger now that we are painfully aware that we are not "bulletproof", nor are we immortal. There was a time when you could not have convinced us otherwise.

Next week, the little town where we grew up will host a large festival. It's an annual event, and many of us try to return as often as possible to reconnect with our friends and to reminisce. It seems as if the Class of 1984 will be well represented this year. There is also talk of a Golf Tournament to benefit our lost classmate's children.

One of my friends sent this photo out this morning. It was taken at our 15th class reunion. It's dark and grainy, but it brought a huge smile to my face. I am on the far right in the middle. I either had a great tan, or I was wearing entirely too much foundation. I'd like to think it was a tan! That particular reunion was held the night after the town festival. We were at a home on the river, and the weather was more than cooperative.

I don't know what is being planned for our 25th next year, but I do know that the night will go by much too quickly. We will all promise to keep in touch on a regular basis. Unfortunately, most of us will not see each other until the next reunion rolls around. Our intentions are good.

Obviously I am feeling a bit nostalgic today. These people have played an important role in my life, and I can't wait to see them!

What are your best memories of high school and the people who suffered through it with you??

What wonderful memories. I went to an all-girls' school in Nashville, and we had 77 in our class. Our 30th was this year, but I couldn't go because it was a major prom weekend here for my kids. We lost a classmate in a horrible car accident a few years ago, and we all came together as a class to donate in her name. We had 100% participation, and her wonderful husband wrote each and every one of us a heartfelt note. I love those bonds....

I love the picture!! And I'm sure it is a tan. Bud Man and I both went to really small high schools! Everyone related to everyone...made for some sticky situations in the lunch room gosip mill!!!

You are so lucky! I went to a fairly small school (about 250 graduated in 1985). But my class just didn't seem to 'gel' as a class. I would much rather go to reunions for my sister's class - 1980 than mine. It makes me sad:(

My class had 230 in it, and we all left town forever when we went to college. There are maybe a dozen or so still in the area. To my knowledge, not many are still in touch. Well, maybe they are and aren't telling me ...

What a wonderful post. I envy people from small towns. My class was probably 800 or so. Here in SoCA it's hard to keep in touch. Once in a while someone shows up on Jerry Springer or Judge Judy...unless they happen to be one of Charlie Manson's girls in prison or dating OJ.

My favorite memories revolved around sports, mostly the girls' varsity basketball team. We were wide open and had nothing but fun.

Is that festival this weekend or next? (I'll look it up.) I've never been but have always wanted to. I will definitely be hitting the Oyster Festival this year. I've been away from that one way too long.

If I run out of wine, I'm heading in your direction. Stay dry and safe.

Class of '95- 400 folks. I keep in touch with some of them. Unfortunately I know of some that still act like they are in high school. We've never had a reunion but I think I would go if we did.

When I was in high school my favorite thing was to look at all of the cute boys.

During the 10th, 20th, 25th reunions....the looking at the boys thing???...not so much.

My 20th is next year, and I'm looking forward to it. I haven't stayed in close contact with too many people I went to school with, although facebook has caught a lot of us up with each other, lol.

At my 10th, I spent all my time with the people I spent my time with in high school. The people I liked then are still people that I like now. There was still the "popular" group, who stuck together, and the "stoner" group, many of whom have gone on to productive lives. (One memorable exception looked exactly like he had ten years before!) I wasn't really part of any group, and most of my friends weren't either.

I find it funny that some things just stay the same, no matter how much time passes!

I graduated with a class of 38! Small schools are the best! We were so close! Great memories!

Cheering has to be one of my favorite memories. I graduated from Cape Henry Collegiate School in VA Beach. I was one of 17 gradutates at the time. We are not close at all, but another graduate (many moons later) is now my supervisor! I wouldn't want to go back to that time in my life for all the gold in China!!! I am glad you had a great experience and I hope you have a wonderful time!

You are so fortunate to be a part of such a great group of classmates.
Don't you just love looking at these old pictures? It's funny how they are so nostalgic now.

High school memories are so awesome and make us feel so young again.
Just reunited with my BF from high school after 15 years! She came to Madi's B-day party this year:)

I guess my best memories of high school are from that little podunk town in Louisiana I have referred to before. From my freshman year. I was elected to homecoming court and it was a really big deal for me. Sadly, I was in a rather tragic auto accident shortly afterward and my life was very screwed up for a very long time. High school was honestly something I'd rather forget after that.

I DO love to hear other people's stories and know their memories are dear, though!

I think that's so great that you remember it so fondly! I wish I had been that lucky! No fond memories for SSG, it was definitely a rough time. That ALL got better during college though! Hope you're having a great weekend!

Another one from a small school.-- Class of 22 in '92!! WOO HOO!

This sounds like a wonderful idea. I am a little green with jealousy over here. Talking about memories and only making more! :)

I graduated in a small town also, class of 89 with a total of 29 graduates. We lost one of our classmates to a terrible car accident when she was just shy of her 21st birthday. Or Class Pres is now battling Cancer. He has good days and bad, but with his H.S. sweetheart and three little girls at home, he's got a lot to fight for. When I found out, I spent three days tracking down all our classmates to figure out what we could do for Jason. Next Summer is our 20th Reunion. Hopefully everyone will attend. The 10th reunion was a bust and we didn't have a 15th. For such a small class, most of whom had been together since Kindergarten, so you'd think they'd be a little closer. I didn't join that group until 5th grade and they were a hard nut to crack.
